Quidditch is a sport that has been gaining popularity among Muggles worldwide. A “muggle” is the term used to describe a non-magical person in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. In the series, the wizards play a magical sport on flying broomsticks called Quidditch. There are seven players on each team, one Keeper, two Beaters, three Chasers, and one Seeker. The game is played outside on a field similar to a soccer field except for the three giant hoops that are used to score goals. It’s the Keeper’s job to defend these hoops. The chasers work together to get their ball, the Quaffle, through the hoops and score to gain ten points for their team. The Bludgers are two of the enchanted game balls used in Quidditch. They are made to fly around the pitch and knock players off of their brooms. There are two Beaters on each team who are equipped with a club to hit the Bludgers away from their teammates and encourage it to go after the opposing team. The last game ball is called the Golden Snitch. It’s tiny, about two inches, and has wings to fly quickly around the field. It’s the Seekers job to catch the Snitch before the other team. The Seeker who catches the Snitch is awarded 150 points and usually wins the game.
This sport has been adapted from the much loved Harry Potter series to be played in real life! With a few minor but necessary changes, Quidditch is being played at major colleges as well as high schools and middle schools all over the world. Instead of flying on brooms, this of course is impossible for muggles; all players are required to run while holding a broom between their legs to create the illusion of flight. This requires skill and a sense of humility. The second major adaptation is in the Golden Snitch. In the muggle version of the game, the Snitch is played by a person dressed in all gold with a tennis ball in a sock tucked into the back of his or her shorts. The Snitch does not have to stay in bounds and must run, jump, do acrobatics and tease the others players in order to avoid being caught. The Seeker has to retrieve the tennis ball to get thirty points for their team.
